Thanks for that Mark. Funny. I was thinking earlier about what Haynes had to say on that matter as I recalled something along those lines.

For anyone w/o a Haynes:

From Step 6 of Part 5 "Front brake caliper - overhaul":

"Under no circumstances should the two halves of the caliper be separated"

It also goes on to specify that if there's any severe corrosion, scoring or wear..... on pistons or caliper cylinders, the complete caliper will have to be renewed as parts are not available separately. This manual shows dates of 1984 and 1988. Obviously since then, rebuild companies have figured out a way to make use of old parts. I wonder how much methods and standards vary? Do they mix and match the "best of" parts? Obviously they've figured out some kind of system to check and repair core parts as needed, and they must have found someone to make new pistons, seals for the halves etc. (my failed caliper had a small bit of some kind of rubber sticking out at the seam of caliper halves. I can only deduce that a seal failed) Anyhow....

Of course I would have consulted my Haynes before attempting a rebuild. I won't be splitting open my old Teves if I ever rebuild them.

Neil.
