FYI that boot part number is 251 711 167A .  Only one is required.    Check to see if you have the plastic ring 251 711 117 on the end of the pin 251 711 181 by grabbing the rod and shaking it.  Should not move much.  The ring is available from Bus Depot.  Use good grease inside the boot but do not over-lube the plastic spheres on the shift bracket coming off of the tranny as they stay exposed and too much grease will attract grit, shortening the life of the plastic. Its a special plastic that is "almost" self-lubricated, so only a light coat.    These shift linkage parts are getting really difficult to impossible to find.   Alan

I called Bus Depot today and the part is no longer available. (at least for them) Does anyone know of another source or of a similar rubber boot that will work in this application? Mine is disintegrated. Photos of the exact part are here: http://picasaweb.google.com/1987vanagon/ShiftLinkageBoot# Thanks, Ryan
