Towing to the nearest mechanic may not be what you want. What's the odds that the nearest mechanic has ever seen a vanagon? AAA plus provides 100 mile tows, which is the advantage of them - it's more likely that you can get to a mechanic who knows what a vanagon is.

If you are a good mechanic yourself, then perhaps the additional cost of AAA isn't needed. (I think it's around $100/year. I don't know what regular AAA costs.)

I've had AAA plus since 2004, and they have always been nice. No nonsense about needing an invitation, I don't know what that would be about. AAA works in Canada too, if you expect to be in Canada.
