I just finished hooking up the trailer light connector to my '84
Westy. With the Vanagon separate bulb setup a straight flat 4
connector will not give you brake lights.

I used a Hopkins Taillight Converter #48915.

It has on the VW side-
White to ground
Red to brake
Green to right turn
Yellow to left turn
Brown to park/tail

I now have all the necessary tail lights at the trailer.
 From Walmart, $14 out the door.
