Subject: Re: Rusty Transmission, Remove the Rust or Not?

I posted that on another forum:

I just finish my 29th engine conversion yesterday, did some testing and went home. I was happy. http://www.benplace.com/rejean_subi1.htm

This morning, i open the shop, coffee in hand and i tell my self it's gonna a be a small day (i have worked for 20 days in a row).

I open the light and look at the van and %&?"$?%*&&(/"%/$|?!?%*%/(*/"$%!&"(*%?$%&"$?&*%?*($?&*.............

Puddle of oil under the van, open all light and go see under, red (it's an automatic)... i say to my self the frigging torque converter is cooked... nop, dry. Diff pan seal look wet, ok, so i dry this one with brake cleaner and start he engine... wat and W"/%?&"$&$%&!%&?" oil is coming from the governor cap, that big round cap on the left side or tranny over the drive axle... IN THE CENTER OF THIS ONE????????

Ok, remember my rust post the other day... see me coming! Same van!!!!

I struggle to get that stupid cap off, of course!!! After banging on it for 15 min it finally come off, i look into it and in the sun and... 20 pinholes!!!!

Ok, so i'm sitting in my chair thinking, that van was not leaking oil like that when i got it, what did i do to the trany so it start leaking like that. Well, i clean the hell out of it with a 4000psi water pressure machine. It was so dirty and rusty that i had to. So yes, my conclusion is that dirt and rust was self sealing that cap and when i blasted the dirt and rust out the where holes again... or maybe the 4000psi got rid of the rust and created holes. Can you imagine how thin the metal is! Trace of water was in the cap so i know I'm right.

As that stupid cap was not available at my dealer i fixed it. With JB weld. So be careful with to much psi when using a water pressure machine.

Ben
