Subject: Radio installation question (specifically dimensions)

Ok, I know most of us have run into situations where we are told aparticular radio won't fit in our Vanagons - but in reality they do fit. So that is why I am often sceptical.

Now my current Sony radio is 6.4 inches deep and easily fits but with little to no room to spare. The unit I'm looking at replacing it with is 7.2 inches deep. I'm not sure that will fit.

The reason I think it won't fit is because of that V shape bracket inside the dash that was used to mount the stock radio.

So my question to you all is this: Is there any reason why I couldn't remove that V shaped bracket? I'd cut it out if I had to. As far as I know it serves no thoer purpose that to bolt the original radio in place.
