Dunno bout those comments Neil mentions hearing from fellow travelers regarding California vs Oregon state park campgrounds. I've found them to be equal, in most cases. Maybe Neil's second hand info was more about Northern Ca. state parks...There are some very very special state parks in the southern part of that long long state...nice, friendly, well maintained.. .Remember, California is 'in reality'...two distinctly different states...Southern Ca and Northern Ca. The two halves often make fun and war with each other over division of California's tax dollars, which right now are inadequate to run their huge intrusive government.. If high desert solitude is apealing to you, you might consider taking US 50 across Northern Nevada. Billed as "the Loneliest road" it is starkly beautiful..and you have to cross the desert somewhere, anyway....once across the great basin to the east side of the Sierras in California or Nevada, you have tons of great route choices.
