I definitely would not call it "lazy". Maybe two or three cycles per second.

For experimentation, I have the O2 sensor output sent to the front of the vehicle, through a switch, then back to the ECU. The other day while driving I noticed the O2 monitor was acting as you described. You guessed it, the switch was open! As soon as I closed the circuit the display started toggling rapidly. FWIW I had been driving for twenty minutes and had NOT noticed any difference in performance. YMMV.
