I had this happen on my '85 when I had it. Mike is exactly right - the original rivets have broken. You might not be able to see it exactly because if I recall the bit that rivets to the floor is tucked into a slit in the carpet. You may have to punch out what remains of the rivets in the floor. Once you do there are two holes there (they go right through the floor). You can easily fix it with a couple of small bolts with a nut on each - although as Mike points out it helps to have help cause someone will need to be underneath to tighten tem up.

Good luck - it's not too hard to do.
