If no tow available, and it's a burst hose, some possible temporary
fixes.... This is a LAST RESORT. There IS risk involved. i.e. you
could lose more coolant. This could DAMAGE ENGINE. Mind you, likely
you have already lost a fair amount of coolant. You need to fill and
burp (bleed) the cooling system if you do this.
A rad hose that's NOT cracked at, or really near, connection to rad,
can be patched by wrapping with duct tape. Just make sure hose surface
is clean/dry as possible before applying tape. It may be possible to
wrap duct tape around crack near/at connection. It just might not be
as "successful". Just wrap it goot and tight. If doubtful, don't.
If it's the heater hose, or a failed heat control valve, find a bolt
or ?, that is close to ID of hose and a suitable sized hose clamp.
Temp. clamp hose ~5" (i.e. with needle nose vice grips) before crack
to minimize coolant loss, cut hose at "good" portion before
break/failed valve, slip hose clamp over hose, insert bolt, position
clamp, tighten, release temp clamp.
If possible, fill cooling system with 50/50 coolant/water. If not,
100% water should be ok. Just keep eye on temp gauge. If burst rad
hose was repaired, keep heater valve open (heat on). This will aid in
cooling and is also a good idea. i.e. if you feel heat, chances are
the cooling system doesn't have a bunch of air in it.
