On your white paper build sticker (usually under the dash near the fusebox or on top of the engine bay) you may see some of these codes, along with your paint details and VIN.

I found this list on the Karmann Gipsy UK group member website http://karmann-coachbuilts.com/ If anyone has a better list pls post a link to it.
