You are correct. Proplyene glycol is actually used as a food additive. The most well-known brand I've heard of is called Sierra.

Read about it though, seems like it's really not the best choice. Heat can break down forming acids which corrode your cooling system, it can also support bacteria growth causing slime and corrosion (though I'd guess in an engine the heat would tend to kill off any bacteria).
