Cooler installed?

Hello Robert,
I am running one of the bus boys coolers on my air-cooled vanagon. It is
installed just inside of the left wheel well behind the coil spring tower
area. This is driver side, on the non-starter side of the transmission.
On the inner, transmission side the cooler is mounted to the ceiling of this
area while on the outside, tire side of this area the cooler is mounted
lower, at the frame rail. This angles the cooler down from inside to
outside a fair amount which makes it easier for me to inspect it or wash it
with the pressure washer (just lean over and look inside the wheel well
above the tire). I also suspect that this increases passive air flow a good
ammount.
I installed a radiator fan on it when I found that in some situations my oil
was staying a bit warmer than I wanted. This was in high-temp, slow
driving, low air-flow situations. The fan really drops the temps quickly on
the rare occasion that I turn it on.
I also installed the thermostat which is definitely a necessity. The
thermostat opens at around 180 degrees F and the oil temp is normally at
that temperature indicating that the oil cooler works really well in mild,
or normal conditions (without the fan). On a water cooled van I doubt the
fan would ever get used, unless you were doing some heavy towing or had an
engine problem.
