I had my windshield smashed last year by a chunk of ice which cracked it pretty badly (it flew off a semi on 87E at a toll booth). I had Safelite come to my home with their repair van in the rain and replaced the glass. I would have preferred if they did not come in the rain but they gave me no choice.

The glass was very nice, had a tinting on the top which I like as it shaded the sun while driving. The only bad thing was that I just found out the rubber gasket they put on has shrunk!

I had been noticing a small puddle in the van on the right footwell of the passenger side for the last 6 months and could not figure it out until recently when I examined the rubber.

It has shrunk 1/8" from the old edge where the factory rubber was and hence I was getting a pinhole of exposure on the passenger side of the window about 8" from the base of the window. I put some electrical tape over the spacing, waited till the next storm and no rain in the van.

I called them and they said they would fix it. They also asked me if I requested OEM VW parts when having it installed. I told them that I had no idea that I had to request that! Nor was I ever informed by Geico my insurance carier nor by Safelite that this was necessary or an option! Be warned.

Since my van's engine is still being worked on and not in the van yet I have to wait to bring it to them for them to make the repair. They refuse to come in their repair van to make the examination.

So make sure the rubber is OEM!

Regards to all, Robert NY
