I have one of these in stock however I am very aware of this problem. Usually the front cable part doesn't fail it is the rear threaded portion. I was thinking about getting the old cable from folks as a core and then refurbishing them. This is another slow moving part that normally lasts pretty much forever unless rust comes into the picture. When something moves slow, VW decides that people are never going to need it so they drop it. The best thing to do is to start saving these off of vans you are junking. Even if the threaded part is messed up, then cut that off and weld on a new one to make the repair. Having one spare should do you for a while since I have never sold or used more than a couple of these in the course of a year.
