Hopefully, Ben will see this, and maybe others can help as well.

Ben was generous enough to post pictures of how to pull and air cooled
engine from a vanagon, on his web site. The url is

I used it, and a hundred other sources :-) to guide my on my first air
cooled removal. (all I need now is motivation to put it back in, but that's
a whole nuther story <g>)

I have a friend whose 85 waterboxer (non syncro)  is in need of an overhaul,
and the engine must come out, but I have never done a water cooled engine.
Its not that far from an air cooled, but as I stared into his engine bay, I
saw some things I didn't like, and didn't see how to go about removing it
based on that observation. I know its fairly easy, as so many have done it
and remarked on the simplicity.

So, long story short, is there any site that provides the pictures and steps
for dropping out the water cooled engine, like Ben has for the air cooled? I
am interested in any writeups, and photos, as my friend is not overly
mechincally inclined, so I get to be the guy who is supposed to know what he
is doing :-)  That way I can just stand there, and tell him what to do and
watch him sweat. LOL

Pointers to faqs, pics, and other useful data would surely be appreciated.
