Well I hope I didn't violate any local obscenity laws, but I just did the servi- er, experiment on the pressure cap and I got no particular resistance in either direction, so I guess that answers at least that part of that question. Did a fair Darth Vader impression, if you can imagine Darth Vader with pneumonia.

No caps locally, but I have plenty to do while I'm waiting for an order. : /

Well, my theory is ... the valve is rather unsophisticated so that when there is little pressure (like when I had the nose in the air and gravity let coolant get past) it doesn't seal well like it does when the system becomes pressurized. That said, I'm sure some seal better than others (under low pressure) but still do their jobs.
