This topic came up a few months ago -- my concern with this approach is that if you drill and rivet the inserts into the plastic pipes, you have now created possible micro-fractures in the plastic around the drilled holes, which could spread over time and with repeated heat/cool cycles.

Maybe this does not happen in practice, but the GoWesty kit seems to avoid the possibility entirely.
