I don't recall exactly where in the harness the OBD wires are but if OBD connector not present, finding the OBD wires could take more time than expected, which of course means more $ (time spent finding proper section of harness and unwrapping loom etc.) But, maybe they could be easily found. An added bonus (assuming you have OBD1) is that you should be able to read the blink codes. Handy for one w/o a code reader. (worked for me) Hopefully you will find a knowledgable and honest VW mechanic!
