Slack = bad. Many years ago my dad needed to tow a car a short distance, so he took a logging chain and enlisted Mom to help. The towing car was one of those monster station wagons with the clamshell tailgates -- we called it Battlecar Galactica. He got in the towed car, signaled Mom. Instead of easing the slack out she took up smartly, and CRACK the chain snapped and the bitter end came up and lashed the back of the wagon. All the way up the tailgate, across the back window and way up on the roof, every link made a tiny scar -- dunno why the window didn't break.

Anyway, he always used nylon after that, and took better care instructing his partner-in-crime.
