David,

Call Jim Connel at Jim's VW, Leeds, AL just east of Birmingham on I-20. Phone - 205-699-9600. Tell him I recommended him.

Jim is one of these old time VW rebuilders - engines and trannies - that we all love to stumble upon. He has a whole mountain side of VW's of every stripe just spread out under the trees. It's a startling thing to drive up the mountain to his place and see all those VW's.

I now have in my 88 GL a 2.1L WBX that he rebuilt for me in 2000. It has near 150,000 miles on it and is running strong, uses no oil.

Maybe Jim has something for you, and you can work a deal. It's worth a call.

Although I'd rather put in a rebuilt unit, my funds are tight as they are with most people right now, so I may have to settle for the "used" unit. The guy is asking $350, which is more than what people on thesamba.com are asking, but there isn't anybody else local to me that I've come in contact with yet. I'd almost rather get a whole rough vanagon and part it out to recuperate some of the expense, but those don't seem to be around right now either. > > > > Really, I'm just wanting to check to see if there is somebody within a reasonable driving distance of Nashville, TN that may have a tranny for a cheaper price or maybe a whole vanagon that can be parted out. There are three at the Nashville Pullapart, but I seem to remember they were all stripped of the engine and transaxles. > > > > I'm sure my Westy is a little lonely as it's parked waiting at my parents to get a transplant. This is the first time since purchasing it in 2000 that I've had to leave it behind, as it's always got me where I needed to go. It's a little sad not having it in the driveway. > > > > David Wilhite > > 84' Westy > > Middle TN > > >
