Hi Robert,

I don't remember whether I installed the kit while the engine was in or out (I was converting to a 2.2 Subie during that time). However, if you only want to repair the radiator end of the pipes, then the engine is not involved. The hair dryer made a lot of difference in tapping the pieces back into place. That's pretty tough plastic and I was afraid I would crack it if i didn't apply heat. You could certainly use a heat gun, but be careful and don't melt the plastic pipes. And while you're doing the repair, go ahead and replace the hoses as well (you may already have this planned). There is no need to do the repair only to have a hose split a little later on.

Good luck,

Warren in Santa Fe 88 Westy 2.2 Subie
