the engine code is at the top of the block, just below the cylinder head, on the passenger's side of the block......on what would be the 'upward' side of the 50 degree-installed block. It's stamped, not cast, into a smooth spot at the top of the block.

IMO, a good sign in terms of actual engine conversion. (person who did the conversion knew to wire that in)

Code should be on engine block. Driver side. (lower side of block if mounted at diesel vanagon angle 50*)

This could account for the problems. Blocked fuel flow and/or failing pump. (or damage from water? Anyone?)

Pump noise could also be due to cavitation.
