Subject: Electrical question (non-starting)

'87 GL Auto: When I got done with my tranny swap I drove about five miles and then parked it. I went to start it a couple of days later and no crank. Dash lights/indicators function normally and fuel pump does its thing. No headlights, but flashes brights when I pull the stem. I had the headlight problem before and it cranked fine so I thought it possibly wasn't related or perhaps it was the initial symptom. I figured it was the ignition switch so I swapped it out- the 'old' one had a slightly cracked casing on the bottom. The replacement switch was good the last time anybody tried it, but it didn't change anything.

Voltage at the red wire into the ignition switch is equal to the battery at around 12.2 (I know it's low, I've been messing with this for a few days now and I need to charge it); when I turn the switch, the outbound voltage is about 10.2 and it drops to about 8.4 at the neutral safety switch. I can't make much out of the diagrams in the Bentley but it seems to me that the line between the ignition switch and the safety switch is one wire.

Where is my juice going?

Cya,

Robert
