If the information I have is accurate, this was a low-mileage rebuild by VW
of Canada.
I'm sure I haven't been in as many engines as some of you guys but I've
never seen any build up like that at all in an intake (and this on some
high-mileage engines) so I was surprised to see it.
You can see that the one injector is nearly occluded by that stuff.
I'm going to take most of the hard parts to the machine shop for inspection
and cleaning. I was mostly wondering if I should be suspicious of any of the
sensors or 'soft pieces' based on what happened there.

I was expecting intake ports blocked about 80 % by dark black crud from you
description,
but ........sure there's a coating of junk, but that's not that bad at all
for a high miles, blown, or overheated, waterboxer engine.
it gets that way from things like - worn engine, and lots of blow by,
running not warm enough, like bad thermostat, short trips, tired injectors,
never adding a cleaner additive to the fuel , etc.
if this engine or van has any of that, I'd say this amount of crud build up
is entirely normal.
Clean it out of there real good of course.
