As Mike points out, I think you will have trouble getting the boxspring into the van. The mattress part is usually bendable, and might fit (if not overly thick).
However, even w/o a rack, you can tie down a queen boxspring or similar large object on the poptop roof as follows:
1. Get two 16' long 2x4 pieces of lumber, or any other long object. These will be used as hold downs.
2. Put boxspring on poptop; soft side down
3. Put lumber pieces on top of boxspring.
4. Open rear hatch halfway. Pass a string around each of the two rear hatch hinges. Push string so it rests on the solid metal bracket forward of the hinge part. Close hatch. Tie down rear end of lumber tight with these strings.
5. Now tie down front ends of the lumber tight to eyelets in Westy front roof rack.
To get good leverage in the rope you can use this knot:

Finish:

It is the upper part in the image that slides in a way to give you a 3-1 force multiplying leverage.
Same method works to transport other bulky objects that are too big to fit inside, yet to short to be tied down directly in the front and back of van.
When I moved cross country I had some bulky stuff on the poptop (few sheets of isocyanate insulation -- notice packrat nature ;-). Since I was also carrying two kayaks, I just used the kayaks to hold down the sheets.
