Craig,

I raise my hand and second the notion that Ken has put forth. If you have lots of miles, there are THREE (3) things to look at - the new shifter kit, for the tranny, and the front kit for the shifter lever up front - those two things will prol'ly take care of it. HOWEVER - when you drop your spare tire, you will see a box that covers the bottom end of the shift lever where the shifter rod attaches, which has to be removed to enable removal of the shifter lever. Item number THREE(3) is found in that box. If you will turn it over, you will note two little appurtenances inside the box. One is permanently fastened in place, the other is fastened in place by screws. These two little gizmos help in the shifting process. If worn, they will contribute to poor shifting. Inspect these, then replace the replaceable one if needed. That too will help get things properly aligned for better shifting.

Good shifting.
