If either of these is no in your > opinion, can you recommend something else?" Yes, I can. I had these tires on my current ride when I bought it in '02. They are "rocks" to drive on. HARSH AFAIC. I got Nokian Hakkapeliitta C2's but would recommend the CS (they don't make it anymore) but DO make: http://www.nokiantyres.com/tyre?id=10360793&group=3.02&name=Nokian+Hakka+C+Cargo I'm not sure of the particular tire they now make that would be a good match for a vanagon, but all the van tyres are rated at least at 102, and some as high as 112. The tire I had could be inflated to 70 lbs psi, and was C rated and was dynamite .... and NOT a harsh ride. Excellent tires.

Oh, and I had a 225/65-16 tyre (Nokian Hakka) in the clamshell BUT, I had put 2" hinge extensions on it and cut the rear of it so it would "swing" open and shut with those hinges on. Plenty of room in there that way and a very easy mod. I can send you a photo of that clamshell mod so let me know if you want that.
