I have 4 of the VW of CA rebuilds at my shop.
2 are or OK and run well but have leaking heads, the other 2 were so poorly rebuilt I would not even bother using the cases again.
Both show the same issue......the flywheel spins unbalanced and jams the starter while starting the motor.
I figured it was sloppy bearings and incorrect endplay?
All four motors have less than 50 thousand miles on each since rebuild.
Sorry for the bad news.
I have a fellow Vanagon mechanic in my area looking for a 2.1 rebuild.....who is doing it well.
GW is not an option for him due to price.

John, et al, these engines were rebuilt by Cummins International
in Toronto. They were the OFFICIAL VW engine rebuild centre for North
America. Those engines were completely rebuilt, top to bottom. In some cases
they used oversized pistons on barrels that had been bored out. I have
rings for those pistons if needed. They came from Micahel Tivis (?) who is on
this list. In general they are good rebuilds but they were prone to head
gasket leaking as they had not discovered the right way to seal the heads
before they shut that operation down a few years ago.
>>>>Hi All,
I'm just starting a rebuild of a 2.1L engine that was given to me from
an 86 Westy with 134k miles on the odometer. I found a yellow VW
Canada label With engine code MV and serial #000151. Does anyone know
what the Canadian reman process includes? Do they split the case and
replace the main and rod bearings, or do they just fix the failure
mode i.e. reseal the heads if that's the reported problem.
Any info on the VWoC reman engines would be greatly appreciated..<<<<<
