If the noise is from a bad pinion bearing you want to get the tranny
repaired ASAP. The longer you go the more likely you will need to replace
the ring and pinion set. This adds a lot of cost to the tranny overhaul.

I replaced the transmission fluid and I'm still getting a whining noise.  It
actually seems to be a little louder.  I checked the rear wheels to see if I
could detect a bearing problem but everything seemed fine.  If this is a
worn differential or transmission problem, how long is it likely to go
before it totally dies?  Should I avoid long trips?  I was planning to take
it camping about 3-4 hours away in a week.
