I spotted one Vanagon in the staging area of our favorite local place and tracked its placement in the yard online.  Twenty-four hours later (soonest I could get there) the alloys, grille, lights, front buckets and more were gone.  I got what I needed but not everything I wanted.  Having a well-known independent VW repair shop two blocks from that yard probably cut down on my window of opportunity.  I'm sure they get preferred informant status.

The scrap steel is worth more than the parts.
  Also, junk yards, or Salvage yards as they are called in this age of
fanciful labels (ie. Sanitary Landfill=Dump)  are often under financial
pressure paying taxes as potential "Real Estate"..The land is valued at it's
potential for some brokers and banks to make a killing off...

They can't easily keep vehicles in unlimited numbers.
