I'm sure they split the cases and a 'real rebuild' ........they have to. No company like VW of VW of Canada could ever claim an engine is 'rebuilt' without going completely through the bottom end. I bought one new, from a VW dealer a few years ago. It look more than just rebuilt to me. the heads looked brand new. the case even looked like it might have been brand new. lol.........one engine, I have one right now ............it had a fire , all the top 'stuff' was melted to nothing ....... like the air flow meter is a lump of barely recognizable charred 'whatever' ..........encased in asphalt where it feel to the street. Severe burnt mess, 'on top' .........that engine. Under the AC bracket and all that burnt stuff........the gold rebuilt label is still there. It must not have burned too long. The van's body isn't very messed up and the interior didn't catch 'too' on fire back there. And everything on top of the engine replaced and restored....... that engine sounds darn tight and smooth ! But I think they 'try hard' to make a decent product on those 'rebuilt for VW of American in Canada' engines.....lots of them are probably pretty good.
