Smell/taste the fluid -- coolant tastes sweet (and is poisonous, so taste discreetly!). When you say "checked the coolant" -- the tank you need to check is the one under the engine hatch, not visible through the license-plate door. A small leak over time will draw down the visible overflow tank, but a big one now will not.

But from the description, I'm betting it's coolant from the water pump.
