Nice thought there on lubing the water pump ......
except ...........I've never seen a noisy water pump on a vanagon .....
squeaky glazed noisy v-belt .........yes, but not the w. pump itself.
what I use is machinist's water soluble oil, about a cup or two in the whole
cooling system.
Been doing this on cars over 20 years now, with excellent results always.
I'm wondering if it's a rattle in the engine.
Would still like a description of the sound ...........rattle, squeak,
clunk, etc. That might help.
here's an interesting thing I have noticed about noises from the engine area
of cars.
You can often hear the sound better from 30 feet away, than you can being
right at the engine.
When you're right by the engine .........the sound you want to concentrate
on gets lost in all the other sounds.
of course.........a hardwood listening stick, or stethoscope is great fun to
use listening around on an engine.
Many parts make sounds when you listen to them specifically and for their
internal sounds. Injectors click, distributors make a whirring sound,
alternators make bearing sounds, rocker arms make clicky sounds , etc. etc.
It's worth doing just for the learning more about car repair and your
vanagon .
Can't hurt, that's for sure.

I seem to recall Scott Daniels (of turbo vans) posts regarding a
cooling system additive that helps lubricate parts. Sorry. Can't
recall brand/application etc.
Assuming water pump is making the noise, you might want to search the
archives under his name. If this stuff is suitable for this, it may
help "nurse" the pump along.
