I should have said a scream, not a howl.  Bearings chattering make a
very distinct noise, but it's a bit hard to describe.  Once it's
started the scream tends not to change pitch, because all the output
of the motor is suddenly devoted to rolling the shaft around in
little circles.  On a drill or portable saw you can put off the
inevitable by copious oiling with heavyish (for the application) oil
every time you run the thing, but on this motor there's no access, of course.
