The ONLY way you can move the cooler to replace that O-ring without detaching the hoses is to remove the pipe nipple by locking onto it with two nuts back to back, there is JUST enough space to do this with two OEM nuts. This may not always work either if that pipe nipple is corroded well into the engine case. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and drain the coolant.

>>>>>I just took a nice coolant bath under my 1990 Westy :) Trying to replace the gasket between the oil cooler and engine block (had an oil leak there). I couldn't get the cooler off with the hoses attached so I tried undoing one hose while quickly pulling the cooler off. The plan was to put the hose back on while it was hanging there. Good plan, huh? I thought so too ;-). Cooler got stuck halfway while my t-shirt turned a nice wet, blue/green color. What now? Anyone have luck getting this cooler off without detaching the hoses? And now it looks like I'll have to bleed and refill my cooling system (haven't done this since I owned the van, so it's time). I hear that's not much fun. Thanks for any insights!<<<<<

hey Frank I don't disconnect any hoses to replace that seal. take the oil filter off and remove the nut on the threaded shaft. then take a large ez out and use it to remove the threaded shaft. then remove the seal and replace it with a new one. Same seal is also on golfs, jettas, vanagons later mark d **************Make your summer sizzle with fast and easy recipes for the grill. (http://food.aol.com/grilling?ncid=emlcntusfood00000005)
