The tach, tranny rebuild and speed sensor are unrelated.  Your tach is driven in by the ECU signal.  There are only a few ways to make your tach work in a subaru powered vanagon.  Early vanagons ('85 and older) can just use the signal unmodified from the ECU.  Newer Vanagons can't pick up the signal unless the tach is switched out with an older jetta tach or the diode modification method is used, or the vanagon tach is modified (instructions are on the Yahoo subaruvanagon site)   Your engine is an OBD2 so you do need a Speed Sensor input to the ECU.  This can be accomplished by the Small Car method (pick up and Magnets mounted to a ring on your CV), A speed sensor simulator - (Enginewiring.com)  or the cruise control module from an early jetta mounted in the speedo head.  (other methods are available, these are the most common)   Your tranny rebuild should have nothing to do with the tach not working.  Like Larry said, your van year is important and who did the conversion?    Paul

After having a rebuilt transmission put in last Thursday, I noticed that my tachometer does not go above 1200 RPMs. I am assuming this has to do with the speed sensor not being installed correctly, but just wanted to confirm with someone who has done a Subaru conversion. I have a 1995, EJ22 and believed the speed sensor was needed was needed after 1994. Scott?

Thanks,

Troy
