well they better be reliable if for aircraft use ! Those Continentals and Lycommings are very understressed for their displacement. There's been a recall on crankshaft failures though.............in Continental engines I think.

how wide is an opposed 6 aircraft engine ? seems it might be rather wide to me for a vanagon. also ......height might be an issue. Then there's going 'backwards' from water cooled to air-cooled.

I do have a plan though .....in case I put an water-cooled engine where there was an air-cooled one........ say I find a cheap Porsche 914 to put a water cooled subaru engine into ....... or even waterboxer ( ! ) .....since I have about 8 of those engines........and it's very related, and might even bolt right up to the Porsche 914 trans.......... what I am always aware of on such a conversion is what to do for heater and defroster !? Like what a huge job to engineer in an entire heater and defroster system from a vanagon or whatever ... But ! .............I figure to build heater boxers ( like air-cooled VW's and Porsches use ) right onto the water-cooled engines exhaust header pipes ! ..... that way, we can keep an 'air-cooled heating and defroster system' stock in the dash and the whole car............but use a water-cooled engine.

ooooh ! ........being inspired by this tiny car/huge engine thing ............I'm wondering what do I have around that I could build something like that with. Well, I am lacking a small micro cheap car to start with..........but I just picked up this running Mercedes 450SLC car for almost nothing ....... and that has a 4.5 liter OHC fuel injected mercedes V-8 in it ........ now all I need is some little ratty car .....geo metro or something ........ convert it to rear wheel drive with some solid rear axle.....and stuff that benz motor in the front somehow........ and for sure ...........for the engine to look outlandishly large for the car is part of the desired affect.

I believe I've seen a BMW Isetta car ...........those ones where the whole front of the car opens ............even the steering wheel and steering column move with the door when you open it ............someone put a giant V-12 engine of some sort in one. well, this is my first Mercedes V-8 engine ....... will the price of a tired but running V-12 mercedescar ever get down to under $ 1,000 ..........you never know !

got to have some fun with all this after all - that's the point ! scott www.turbovans.com
