Subject: Shocks in,, but what's that brass sleeve?

I got the shocks in this morning. Thanks for everyone's help. The rear ones were a joke, about 10 minutes apiece. The fonts ones OTOH...

Question. The passenger side took forver to get that top nut off and then get that plastic sleeve off. I put the old plastic sleeve on the new shock and there was a brass sleeve that was on the shock so I left it there. When I installed the shock the top of the shock did not protrude as much as the old one. On to the drivers side shock, the top nut came off in seconds. The plastic sleeve dropped right off. When I went to put the new shock in the plastic sleeve, which looked a little different then the one on the other side, the brass sleeve made it impossible to put the plastic sleeve back on so I left it off. What is that sleeve for?

Thanks, Bryan
