Subject: brake pads and shoes

I read with interest Dennis Haynes' comments and suggestions for brake shoe/ pads. I have ordered shoes and kit from VW (Albuquerque), but I'm still a bit confused on the shims. I read in one post that a 2 to 3 mm shim would be helpful "unless you're using OEM shoes." However, in another post I think I read that even with OEM shoes a shim would help. First, would a shim help with OEM shoes (set me straight here). Second, I'm trying to envision a shim so narrow that there is only a 2mm difference between the i.d. and the o.d. I checked ACE Hardware and they had nothing even close. I checked McMaster-Carr and nothing came up when I searched 16ODX14IDX1mm.

Thanks!
