The flame has only two settings -- pilot and cooling. So if you're having flame problems when it's cooling, need to clean the orifice with alcohol and compressed air, make sure the gas velocity is low enough that the flame doesn't lift off the seat, burns quietly etc. With a little contortion it's possible to burn the thing without closing up the burner chamber -- should be a quiet blue flame similar size to a candle flame.
