In California it's the sellers responsibility to get the smog check handled.
So they should be offering a van for sale with a recent or current smog
check.
I 'think' all 84's are both fed and Ca.....
but ......I just looked at the license plate door of two 84's looking for
that yellow sticker that tells,
and niether one had that sticker.
on an 85 of mine, that yellow sticker is there........and it says 'conforms
to Ca regs for 1985 ' and doesn't say 'and federal' .
in anycase...........whether it's a fed or Ca model ..........it'll smog the
same I think.
It's the seller's responsibility anyway .
speaking of parts availablity .......
I save every last vanaong part for all types of vanagons except the
air-cooled ones. I save *everything' .......and usually have several to
choose from when selling a good use part out into the vanagon community.
So I need a could of rear seat parts.
I call down to Bug World in Rancho Cordova ,( east sactramento ) where I
have been before, and they had piles and piles of vanagons and vanagon
parts.
Today they tell me 'we got rid off all that vanagon stuff' .........
So I ask them about Eurovan parts, since I just picked up a real beauty of a
5 speed Teal Multi-van that suppossidly has a bad ECU.
They say they don't do thoe either, can't get tham at acution.
all they have is 98 and later VW jettas and simmilar cars.
of course ........they're not intested in the glory and preservation of
vanagons ,............just at whether it's very lucrative or not .....
sure hate to see anyone letting a decent vanagon to to the crusher, they are
still great, great vehicles.
OH!
I just saw, a short while ago.....
a not-bad 84 GL that's been in my shop, that I've worked on with the
owner.....
a super fine chap from Austrahlia.
In a few days he'll be back to Vancouver BC with it, then going home to
Australia. He needs to sell his van.
It is probably a Canadian model I'll have to worn you.
but he just did head work on it, we put in a rebult transmission, worked on
the CV joints....etc.
and he's just been using it on a long trip .........it's super reliable, has
the right tires, etc.
we were thinking he'd ask 1,500 for it, even though we value it at more like
2,500 and up.
I'm sure he's spend 2K on it in the last 6 months.
anyway .....just a thought.
