I'd put a fuel pressure gauge on it, mount it where I can see it at all times... and leave it on for a while, and see if I learned anything from doing that.

I'm thinking along the lines of fuel vaporization ....... 'vapor lock' it's commonly called.......the fuel gets hot, boils, or becomes other than a liquid that the fuel system can pump. I had to very distinct, very clear cases of it in the last few years, on hot days. Quite certain it was vapor lock.

so I'm wondering about your fuel pressure ..... and the fuel itself. you're not using Arco are you ? - don't. and don't use premium either - good ole regular only.

I also wonder if your fuel system is on the ragged edge.........restricted fuel filter, old pump, tired fuel tank, etc. and it only takes a bit to push it over the edge. fuel pressure regulator ....... I rarely see a bad one of those ........but how it's working is important to know.

I also see a lot of vanagons , especially 1.9's that 'run' .......but they aren't running anywhere near like they really should. So often, it's not a 'perfect machine' and 'this one thing' is causing it to misbehave, it's a number of 'half things.'

often it's 5 not right things, and 3 half-not right things, that all add up. I'm testing on a 84 right now about this vary sort of thing ..... starting with testing fuel pressure. I hope you get yours figured out. whenever I am working on loss of power.........I don't feel good about an engine, unless I see a fuel pressure gauge reading what it should. I often leave that gauge on during the whole troubleshooting and sorting through process. And I've found many a clogged fuel filter, weak fuel pump, and restricted fuel tank on vanagons.
