Eric is alive and well. Just heard from him yesterday on our Pittsburgh Vanagon Club emailing list. He's a great guy, helped me put my Bostig in during the month of May. Without him and Walt Spak, our local branch of vanagon nuts wouldn't exist to nearly the extent that it does (we're growing). I can't thank these guys enough, though i'm not sure if Eric's on this list again or not.
