Just the other day I came across a method of "squaring up" a cable end for use in a speedometer. was on a home machinist website, of course i can't recall the name. the procedure was to mill a triangular groove in the face of two bits of steel so that when clamped together they formed a die with the correct cross section. the cable end is clamped between these blocks to form the "square end". seemed a lot of bother and I had a hard tie believing the strands would stay together. maybe i skipped over something. I imagine a ferrule (bike cable end?) crimped on and filed would work better. But also -- I recently noticed in the HELP! section of my FLAPS a do-it-yourself speedo cable replacement. You cut to length and presumably do something to make the square end. Of course, this only replaces the inner cable but that is what usually is needed. Note -- I have not tried this kit myself so I can't attest to it's suitability.
