But if your '88 is similar to my '86, the resistors are like 0.8 ohm, 1.2 ohm and 1.6 ohm coils, and they are independent of each other, so even if one fries, the other speeds should work fine. What is in common is the single wire leaving the resistor pack (+ wire going to the fan), so if that wire is broken or if the connector is bad, then all the lower speeds will be dead. In my '86, the resistor pack is in the evaporator fan housing, but I doubt yours is the same.
