I have only recently returned to the list so this may be old hat to you but when I hear 'bucks' and 'intermittent' in the same description I immediately think of the Vanagon Syndrome. Likely lots of references in the archives so I won't recount it here, but soooo simple to fix with one little capacitor -- can't believe I put up with as long as I did.

BTW -- When my fuel pump gets noisy I usually take it as 'time to change the filter' though that thing is never real quiet.
