You'd typically lose one position at a time, and typically the high speed dies first due to current draw. It is easier to check however. Drop me a line if yours is bad, I'm pretty sure I have a new one that's been laying around for years. Ordered them from BD back in the days before I knew that my '86 Westy has the pre-1986 style A/C, and a totally different switch setup.
