Sounds to me like one of the grommets did not get seated properly, or perhaps the plastic barb fitting was not seated fully and has popped out, maybe a vent hose was not reattached, something is not right.

If you peer in around the front wheel you can see some of the top of the gas tank, you may be able to spot the problem.
