Wow! I could never drive my old air-cooled 81 like that! I had oil temps at 220-260, until I installed an aux oil cooler (no fan), then it stayed closer to 220 at max. (oil temp, not head temp). I also had to keep speeds down to keep the temp down and never got more than 16 mpg! Congrats- you have a nice air-cooled Vanagon! Enjoy the ride - I am sure you did.
